How do I connect environmental careers to my project?
1. Why was the Green High Schools program created?
The Green High Schools Program was created in partnership with the SEEDS Foundation, to recognize the environmentally sustainable actions of students and teachers across Canada, while bridging the gap between environmental education and career exploration.
2. When is the deadline for project documentation and evaluation?
The deadline for project documentation and evaluation is Wednesday, May 8, 2013.
3. Can I have an extension on submitting my project documentation and evaluation?
Unfortunately, extensions will not be granted to complete any documentation or evaluation. This is due to the time-restrictions involved in evaluating and announcing the 2013 Green High Schools recipients.
4. What if my school is already involved in another environmental program like BP’s A+ for Energy, BC Green Games, or Ontario’s EcoSchools?
That’s great! We love to work with schools that are already involved in other environmental programs, so we can offer an additional level of recognition for your activities. If your school is already participating or thinking of participating in another program, please ensure your project includes a career component to complement your project goals.
5. Can I become a Green High School if my school completed a project last year?
We hope all returning Green High Schools will choose to maintain their national status and continue to be a part of the Green High Schools community by participating for many years!
6. What is a teacher sponsor?
Each program requires a teacher sponsor to act as the primary contact between students and ECO Canada. The teacher sponsor will receive all program communications from ECO Canada, sign-off on project registration and evaluation forms as well as provide regular project updates to ECO Canada throughout the school year.
7. How do I document my project?
Get creative! Project documentation can take many forms as long as it accurately portrays the work put into your project, including your integration of environmental careers, and can provide a clear indication of the outcome. Previous documentation has included:
• essays
• photo journals
• slideshow presentations
• videos
• graphic novels
• marketing/campaign collateral (posters, articles, etc)
8. How do I connect environmental careers to my project?
There are a variety of ways to integrate careers into your project. Here are some ideas:
• Invite an environmental professional into your classroom. Research your local environmental professionals, or ask us to help you connect with one in your area
• Partner with a local company who does environmental work
• Tour a post-secondary institution's Faculty of Environment, or related department
• Assume the role of an environmental professional to solve a case study or debate a local issue
• Attend (or host!) a local environmental conference or career fair
