Job Description:
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the leader in wetland conservation, is seeking a Remote Sensing / GIS Specialist to primarily oversee the classification of boreal wetland mapping projects, and secondarily to provide limited GIS technical support (i.e., analytical, cartographic and database management) specific to various GIS projects and program support needs. The Remote Sensing / GIS Specialist will be responsible for undertaking the classification of various wetland mapping projects, and to a lesser extent managing GIS project components, participating in partnership development activities, and providing advanced technical and analytical services required to support DUC's vision and strategies. The position located in Edmonton, Alberta will report to the Western Boreal GIS Manager commencing on the preferred start date of September 1, 2012.
As a member of the Western Boreal Program (WBP) team you will provide Remote Sensing and GIS technical expertise and leadership to internal clients while collaborating with external partners to meet user needs and implement Remote Sensing and GIS project components. The candidate may also collaborate with other Regional and National GIS team members on projects requiring specific expertise. Your responsibilities will primarily be, but are not limited to:
• Classification of boreal wetland mapping initiatives in accordance to internal protocols and standards under the supervision of the lead Remote Sensing Specialist
• Assisting in helicopter or fixed wing field data collection and assisting in managing field logistics for Remote Sensing based projects
• Design and implement Remote Sensing projects and products in consultation with staff and partners to meet user needs
• Lead or participate in project teams providing Remote Sensing & GIS support
• Identifying, gathering, analyzing, and integrating spatial data from internal or external sources
• Creating maps and graphs for presentations, technical papers, or reports
• Compilation of metadata and other documentation
• Operating and maintaining GIS system hardware, software, plotter, and other devices
Qualifications:
You possess a minimum of a university degree in Geography (Remote Sensing – GIS) with some environmental science educational background (preferably ecology), and have a minimum of three years’ work experience using eCognition, Erdas, and ESRI GIS (ArcGIS) software. You also possess the following:
• Solid understanding and experience working with eCognition and Erdas image analysis software
• Solid understanding and experience working with ESRI ArcGIS and associated extensions
• Understanding of Landscape Ecology background or prior experience with wetland ecosystems
• Advanced knowledge of GIS modeling approaches and procedures
• Proven knowledge of geographic (geo-processing) and cartographic principals (projections and datums)
• Excellent cartographic skills in developing various communication delivery products
• Strong statistical background
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or similar graphic production software
• Working knowledge of biophysical habitat inventories
• Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people in dynamic settings
• Strong data management skills
• Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting
• Good time management skills
• Ability to work on multiple projects, set priorities, and meet rigid deadlines
• A valid Canadian driver’s license is required
