Public Health Promoter

Our health unit has an exciting opportunity for an honours graduate of a Health Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Health Promotion or Environmental Health Studies program plus a minimum 1 year relevant experience in community-based health promotion or environmental health to conduct research, plan, develop, implement and evaluate population based health promotion strategies in order to effectively meet Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines and support the overall strategic direction of the health unit.

We are the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, an accredited health unit providing public health services to approximately 500,000 residents in the County of Simcoe and the District of Muskoka through our 9 offices. With a staff of over 400, our head office is located in beautiful Barrie, approximately one hour north of Toronto, in Central Ontario. The region offers beautiful beaches and excellent year-round recreational activities for every interest.

•Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation achievement of overall program strategic goals & the development of the program operational plan and work plans.
•Provide orientation, consultation and support to program staff and train, guide and support volunteers, peer educators and students.
•Provide input into program budgets and specially funded project budgets and monitoring of such.
•Participate in the development & achievement of overall Service Area strategic direction; comply with Service Area policies; actively participate in cross-program collaboration.
•Participate in the development & implementation of the Agency vision, mission, values and strategic plan; participate in Emergency Response.
•Contribute to team and agency effectiveness.

•Intermediate knowledge of public health, population health, health promotion concepts (including social marketing), behaviour change theory, healthy public policy development and community development
•Intermediate knowledge of program planning & development utilizing better practice information.
•Intermediate risk assessment and communication skills.
•Intermediate knowledge of legislation as it relates to environmental health, health promotion and policy.
•Intermediate knowledge of environmental health and environmental policy development.
•Intermediate ability to critically assess research for relevance and application to program planning.
•Intermediate oral and interpersonal communications skills including facilitation & presentation skills.
•Intermediate written communication skills including an ability to produce effective reports and program materials, promotional materials, presentations & communication campaigns (media, social marketing).
•Intermediate ability to manage and prioritize a variety of projects and tasks.
•Demonstrated intermediate abilities using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
•Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle or the ability to travel in a timely and efficient manner to locations within and outside the health unit district.
•Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Minimum 1 year relevant experience in community-based health promotion or environmental health.
