Woodlands Operation Supervisor
DMI manages 2.9 million hectares of timberlands through a Forest Management Agreement with the Alberta Government to supply most of its fibre requirements for its pulp mill in Peace River. DMI holds the rights to the deciduous fibre (aspen and poplar trees, other companies hold the coniferous tenure) in the FMA. The company also harvests timber from quotas in the region. PRPD manages these lands within the FMA on a sustainable basis for commercial harvest, reforestation, wildlife habitat, fish habitat, ecological diversity, and other non-timber values.
The Peace River mill employs 300 people and produces about 475,000 air-dried metric
tonnes of Kraft pulp. The pulp mill was the first of Alberta’s new generation of pulp mills and pioneered the production of hardwood pulp in northwestern Alberta. It is designed to minimize the impact on the environment and utilizes previously uneconomical hardwood timber and residual softwood chips purchased from sawmills in the area.
With PRPD’s portable chipping process, trees are be processed into chips in the field, leaving only chips and hog fuel to be transported back to the mill. Not only does this eliminate several processing steps, but it also creates a better quality product that is safer to transport and reduces waste.
