Level One Essential Skills Training Program

To reinforce your learning and support the course content, our courses integrate videos from industry experts, industry-relevant examples, interactive activities and knowledge check questions. You will also be provided with a glossary and additional resources to further support your learning. 

Below is an overview of the courses required for this certificate. Each course has a pre-and post-assessment so that you can identify gaps in knowledge and see improvements after learning. 

1. Professional Communications

In any workplace, success is built on effective communication with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders. Communication skills can often take years of trial and error to develop, however, this course gives you the opportunity to build your communication skills quickly. By providing techniques to overcome typical communication barriers, adopt effective body language, deliver engaging presentations, resolve conflict, and morethis course can help hone effective and professional communication.

2. Technical Writing Basics

Writing starts with collecting data and ideas. The challenge is to take this information and communicate it in a way that is both comprehensive and easy for your readers to understand, despite their technical background. This is a key skill for the environmental workforce.

This course is intended to help you develop your ability to write efficiently and with confidence. You will learn how to produce strong project deliverables and build the business-writing skills that matter most for environmental professionals. 

Topics include:

  1. Using Language
  2. Environmental Impact Assessments
  3. Proposals
  4. Select the Right Content and Format
  5. Technical Reports

3. Project Management Basics

Good project managers need to apply organizational, communication, and leadership skills every day. This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the skills and other knowledge areas that are the most important to good project management. Additionally, you will also learn how to balance the triple constraints of scope, time, and cost.

This course also provides an overview of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) while using environmental project examples and scenarios. 

Topics include:

  1. What is Project Management?
  2. What Makes a Good Project Manager?
  3. Project Management Fundamentals
  4. Integration, Scope, Time, and Cost Management
  5. Stakeholder, Risk, Communications, Quality, and HR Management

Once you have completed these three courses and assessments there will be a final feedback survey. After completing the survey, you can claim your official Essential Skills 100 certificate! 

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I have access to the course?

Once you have purchased the course, you will have six months of access to complete the course.

What is the delivery format?

This is an online, self-directed training program. Each individual course allows you to learn practical skills through expert videos, real-life scenarios, workbooks and more.

What if I have questions during the course or encounter issues trying to complete a course?

If you have any questions while moving through the courses, you can send them to training@eco.ca and someone will get back to you within 2-3 business days.

How will I be recognized once I’ve completed the certificate (all five courses and assessments)?

You’ll receive a formal Certificate of Completion upon completing all of the required courses and evaluations. This certificate also counts towards professional development credits for EP Certification.

Do I need to buy separate course materials (e.g. textbooks, guides, etc.)?

All of your learning materials are included, so you don’t need to buy anything extra.

How long will it take me to complete the certificate?

Depending on the learner, each course can take up to five hours to complete, therefore the entire certificate will take up to 15 hours total.

I have a membership with ECO Canada, where do I find my online course discount code?

If you are an EPt, EP, EP Auditor, ECO+ PRO or ECO+ Enterprise member, you receive a discount on our online training courses. To retrieve your discount code, that can be applied at checkout, you must:
