Climate Change and ZEVs

When discussing ZEV emissions, both Vehicle Emissions and Production Emissions are important to consider

Vehicle Emissions

Here, we are looking at vehicle emissions produced at the point-of-use (tailpipe emissions).

Production Emissions

Many EV opponents will mention other emissions in the production of the vehicles and batteries needed for the EV transition, including the increased mining impact. At this time, it’s clear that many studies have shown that these emissions are greater than conventional cars, however the reduction in vehicle emissions during operation will equalize the impact in just a few years in most cases (dependent on the emissions of power generation where the EV is deployed). In a recent Yale University study, it was found that, despite the increased effort in mining and production, lifecycle emissions (the total of vehicle emissions and production emissions) are FAR lower for EVs. The cleaner the grid, the quicker the EV has lower total emissions than the gasoline car.
