Alberta is the fourth largest region for environmental employment in Canada, with more than 96,000 professionals employed in environmental roles in 2020. Our outlook for the next ten years indicates that employers in the province will need to hire more than 28,000 workers for new environmental roles and another 30,000 to replace retiring environmental workers. This amounts to approximately 60% of 2020 environmental employment levels.
Key insights from our research into Alberta’s Environmental Recruitment Trends (2018-2020) include:
- Alberta experienced a 24% decrease in enviro ads when compared to 2019 and a 32% decrease from 2018.
- Top industries across the province vary year over year, with Health care and social assistance, Educational services and Utilities experiencing increased recruitment in 2020 while Accommodation and food services, Wholesale trade and Transportation and warehousing experienced the greatest declines in enviro ads between 2019 and 2020.
- Preliminary job posting data for 2021 indicate that recruitment for environmental workers is on the rise in Alberta with the province’s environmental workforce projected to grow faster than any other region of Canada through 2030.
