Women in Leadership Series

ECO Canada Women in Leadership Series

ECO Canada hosted its first Women in Leadership webinar on October 19, 2022. The Women Leaders Panel Discussion consisted of four panelists speaking about their experiences in the environmental and engineering sectors, their journey to reach their current roles and the importance of having women leaders in decision-making roles.

The webinar panellists were Marissa Reckmann, CEO of AGAT Laboratories, Andrea Lougheed, Senior Geotechnical Engineer BGC Engineering, and Jocelyn Peltier-Huntley, Founder of Prairie Catalyst Consulting.

The Facts about Women and Leadership in Canada

  1. Women comprise just over half of the Canadian population, yet are underrepresented in professional leadership positions.
  2. Women are 30% less likely than men to get promoted out of an entry-level job.
  3. Women in Canada hold about a third of management occupations, and 30.9% of senior management-level jobs
  4. Only 4% of Canada’s largest publicly traded companies have a woman CEO.

ECO Canada’s webinar touched on many different challenges women face in the environmental and engineering sectors. Panellist Marissa Reckmann communicates that in order to retain women in these sectors, you must “surround yourself with a network that is very supportive of your career as a woman.”

When asked about the challenges around building a successful career as a woman, Andrea Lougheed says “One thing to recognize is it has more to say about the other person, and their biases, than anything to do with your worth and your capabilities.” Lougheed expresses that there will be individuals that challenge you, but it is important to not give up.
