Environmental Job Market Trends (2018)

Canada’s environmental job market expanded in 2018 with 24,500 job ads online (+8% increase from 2017)

Canada’s environmental job market expanded in 2018 with 24,500 online job ads, reflecting an 8% increase from 2017

Environmental employment increased by 17% from 2016 to 2018 thanks to continued growth in Canada’s economy and industries employing environmental professionals in Manufacturing, Professional, scientific and technical services, Public administration, and Construction.

At the same time, provincial governments have been implementing climate change plans as part of their initiatives. For example, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Nova Scotia have recently implemented new regulations designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Those initiatives encourage firms to seek qualified environmental professionals to assess new legislative requirements and comply with them.

In this report, you will discover:

  • Canada’s job market trends in 2018. The national unemployment rate fell from 6.3% in 2017 to 5.8% in 2018, the lowest annual rate since 1976.
  • Highly demanded areas of practice. Natural Resources Management was the area of practice that offered the most opportunities for environmental professionals. Employers in this field posted 8,300 job ads.
  • Provinces where environmental employment is increasing. Alberta grew by 36% in 2018, and it’s one of the top regions seeking qualified workers.
