The Government of Canada’s new Canada Greener Homes Grant means there’s an increased demand for energy advisors to help Canadian homeowners save on energy bills while reducing the impact buildings have on the environment. With this grant comes a great opportunity for those in rural areas and from Indigenous backgrounds to secure meaningful work in the environmental sector.
Becoming an energy advisor
By becoming an energy advisor, you can help support the Greener Homes Initiative which was designed to help Canadians retrofit their home and buildings; create thousands of jobs, and save energy costs for families and businesses.
Another aim of this grant is to increase the diversity and representation of the existing energy advisor workforce while supporting green economy growth for Indigenous peoples.
At least 10% of the funding for this project has been allocated to Indigenous governments or organizations (e.g., band councils, land claim organizations) and there’s a particular focus on projects which help
- Under-served areas: the North (north of the 60o parallel), the Prairies and Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as rural, remote and Indigenous communities more broadly.
- Under-represented groups: women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized individuals and individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.

Saving energy saves you money
Buildings, including our homes, account for 18% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Government of Canada’s Greener Home Grant helps you make your home more energy-efficient. This means making homes more comfortable and more affordable to maintain while also supporting environmental objectives.
What’s available through the initiative?
- Up to 700,000 grants of up to $5,000 to help homeowners make energy-efficient retrofits to homes, such as better insulation
- EnerGuide evaluations (worth up to $600) and expert advice to homeowners so they can begin to plan their retrofits
- Recruitment and training of EnerGuide energy advisors to meet the increased demand; creating new jobs across Canada
Participants are eligible for up to $5,600 total under the initiative. Updates will be provided over the life of the initiative to keep homeowners informed. As part of this grant, there’s a focus on reaching diverse Canadians including those living in remote and northern communities and those with limited internet access.
