Wave Makers: Blue Career Stories – Featuring GeoSpectrum

ECO Canada and Ocean Alliance Canada (OAC) partnered to produce a compelling video series titled Wave Makers: Blue Career Stories, spotlighting the diverse career journeys within Canada’s ocean sector.

In this feature, the spotlight was on GeoSpectrum Technologies Inc., a company known for its innovative contributions to marine technology and ocean acoustics.

GeoSpectrum specializes in underwater acoustic transducers and integrated sonar systems for defense and environmental applications. With over 30 years of experience, the company delivers both standard and custom solutions backed by rigorous in-house testing. Its expertise spans hydrophones, sound projectors, surveillance software, and handling systems.

The series captured three distinct career stages: junior, mid-level, and senior, through the voices of GeoSpectrum team members. By showcasing these stages, the video illustrated how careers in the ocean sector evolve and how organizations like GeoSpectrum foster growth through professional development and team collaboration.

Featured in the video were:

  • Clark Murray, Director of Procurement and Quality

“It’s critically important that we invest in younger generations, giving them the skills they need to succeed.”

  • Hannah Hewlin, Marketing and Communications Coordinator

“Your education may lead you down a path to ocean tech that you never thought possible. I never imagined that I would have a career in the ocean industry, but I have really fallen in love with it over the last few years.”

  • Derek O’Connor, Mechanical Engineering Technologist

“Sometimes it’s not always apparent where your skills will best be utilized, but the only way to know and understand that is by putting yourself out there.”

More than just a career overview, this series celebrates the people behind the roles that are shaping the future of ocean innovation and sustainability.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
