Advance Your Environmental Career with the MAEP Program at Royal Roads University: Student Testimonial

For professionals looking to make a meaningful impact in the environmental sector, the Master of Arts in Environmental Practice (MAEP) at Royal Roads University offers a flexible, fully online graduate program designed for professionals looking to expand their skillset to stay current in the rapidly growing industry.

Students like Jaclyn Damboise, who is currently enrolled in the program, are gaining the skills and knowledge needed to lead in areas such as climate change, sustainability, and environmental policy through a humanities perspective.

“This program is insightful, builds confidence, and is extremely flexible”

Jaclyn particularly values the program’s flexibility, which enables her to pursue academic goals while raising children and advancing her career. She shares how the MAEP Program supports the integration of learning and work:

“Balancing your professional life with your student life is more about amalgamating the two so they can both benefit from each other. It’s more about bringing my education into my workplace and vice versa. A lot of the projects I would pursue would have a lot to do with where I worked.”

The MAEP program blends academic depth with practical application, preparing graduates to tackle current and complex environmental challenges with confidence and clarity through flexible learning arrangements.

The program consists of 10 courses (30 credits) and can be completed in two to seven years. Each course runs for 10 to 12 weeks, with an average weekly time commitment of 10 to 20 hours. This structure is ideal for working professionals of all ages who want to advance their education without putting their careers on hold.

“My undergrad is from 2004, so a lot has changed since I graduated. I do believe this program will open new doors but at the same time I come prepared.”

What makes the MAEP program stand out is its focus on current and relevant skills relevant to all career levels. Students develop expertise in assessing environmental impacts, preparing communication plans, and developing strategies to mitigate environmental issues. The skills gained from the MAEP program are in high demand across government, non-profit, and private sectors.

“There’s a lot more technical ability that I have gained since I have taken this program. That in itself certainly makes you more of a candidate that stands out with my age group. It allows the employer to know that I’m entering this space as someone who is willing to learn and who’s willing to take on new adventures.”

The program also offers a choice between a research paper or a practicum, allowing students to apply their learning to real-world environmental issues. This hands-on experience helps graduates stand out in competitive job markets and positions them as fast learners who can adapt to evolving challenges.

Whether you’re looking to shift into a new role or deepen your impact in your current field, the MAEP program provides the tools, flexibility, and support to help you succeed. With access to a network of environmental professionals and interactive online learning, students are not just keeping up; they’re staying ahead.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
