Environmental workers can be found in every region of the country and are employed across all Canadian industries in a wide variety of occupations. Across the country, about 689,000 workers in 2020 (or 1 in 26) were in an environmental role. These workers directly or indirectly contribute to environmental protection, natural resource management, and sustainability in Canada as well as collaborate and innovate to address Canada’s environmental challenges and develop new markets.
Key insights from this snapshot of Alberta’s 2020 environmental recruitment include:
- In 2020, 14% of the country’s total environmental workforce was employed in Alberta, making the province the 4th largest region for environmental workers.
- Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Alberta’s total workforce, the province accounted for just over 12,700 or 9.2% of all environmental job postings (enviro ads) across Canada.
- Preliminary job posting data for 2021 indicate that recruitment for environmental workers is on the rise in Alberta and job vacancies have rebounded to the same levels observed at the beginning of 2019.
