Meet The First EP®(GHG) Certified Professionals: Pioneers in Carbon and Climate Management

The transition to a low-carbon economy depends not only on technology and policy, but on people. Skilled professionals who can measure, manage, and meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions are now at the center of global climate action.

GHG management is one of the fastest-growing environmental specializations, yet credentialed professionals remain scarce. In order to close that gap, ECO Canada and GHGMI have partnered to offer the EP®(GHG) designation to GHG professionals.

April 2026 marked the first official certifications granted by the CECAB Board to four GHG Professionals who decided to take a further step into their career, and get the EPt(GHG) designation. Congratulations to Isuri Ranchigoda Gamage, Abhijeet Nehra, Mohammed Abubakar, and Maddie Hague.

We would like to further present Isuri Ranchigoda Gamage and Abhijeet Nehra to you: two individuals who reflect the growing momentum behind this globally recognized credential.

The EP®(GHG) designation is helping define a new standard for professional competence in greenhouse gas management, equipping practitioners with the skills needed to address emissions accounting, reporting, and climate strategy in a rapidly evolving regulatory and environmental landscape.

Below are the backgrounds of two professionals who are part of this emerging EP®(GHG) community.

Isuri Ranchigoda Gamage, EPt(GHG)

Isuri Gamage’s journey into environmental work began with curiosity, specifically, how human activity reshapes natural systems and how those impacts can be measured and managed responsibly.

She built a strong academic foundation through a B.Sc. Honours in Environmental Management and Forestry, followed by a Master’s in Environmental Engineering, where she focused on environmental systems, pollution control, and data-driven problem solving.

This practical perspective now informs her growing focus on GHG accounting, emissions measurement, and carbon footprint analysis, where she aims to support organizations moving from compliance-based reporting toward proactive climate strategies.

A defining milestone in her journey has been becoming an EPt(GHG) with ECO Canada under the EP®(GHG) designation framework. For Isuri, this designation represents both professional structure and credibility, reinforcing her commitment to ethical practice and continuous development in greenhouse gas management.

“A defining step in my professional journey has been becoming an Environmental Professional-in-Training in GHG (EPt- GHG) with ECO Canada. The EP designation represents more than a credential—it is a commitment to upholding high standards of environmental practice, ethics, and continuous learning. Being part of this professional community has provided me with both credibility and direction as I continue to build my career in sustainability.”

Abhijeet Nehra, EPt(GHG)

Abhijeet Nehra brings a complementary expertise to the EP®(GHG) community through his work in sustainability reporting and environmental economics, with a strong focus on GHG accounting and data-driven disclosures.

Within the EP®(GHG) pathway framework, his expertise reflects the growing need for professionals who can translate complex emissions data into clear, credible reporting aligned with emerging global standards.

The EP®(GHG) Designation: Building Climate Competence

Developed through a partnership between ECO Canada and the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI), the EP®(GHG) designation is designed to strengthen professional capacity in greenhouse gas management and climate accountability.

It supports practitioners working across key areas such as:

  • GHG accounting and reporting
  • Carbon analysis and verification
  • ESG disclosures and sustainability reporting
  • Decarbonization transition planning

As climate regulations expand and carbon markets mature, the EP®(GHG) designation provides a structured pathway for professionals to build credibility and contribute meaningfully to climate solutions.

Two Paths, One EP®(GHG) Community

The EP®(GHG) framework includes two levels:

  • EPt(GHG) – for emerging professionals building foundational experience
  • EP®(GHG) – for experienced practitioners advancing their expertise

The EP®(GHG) designation is more than a credential, it is a growing professional community shaping how organizations measure, report, and manage emissions.

As more professionals join this pathway, the capacity to deliver credible, consistent, and impactful climate solutions continues to expand.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
