Spring Cleaning: ECO Canada Edition

Are you looking for a way to enjoy the warm spring weather?

Here are some fun and environmentally friendly ideas to try in outside in the sunshine:

Give your local community some spring cleaning!

This past Earth Day, a few members of the ECO Canada staff participated in a cleanup in downtown Calgary.

While our local parks and roadways may look generally clean, they are often littered with small and large pieces of garbage that are hidden in grass or roadside curbs.

All it takes is a few friends, some gloves, garbage bags, and a good attitude to take a littered landscape back to its pristine condition.

Outdoor clean-ups are a great way to spend time outdoors, get active, and give back to the community.

Clean up your outdoor space to make a beautiful garden

Are you looking to spruce up your yard? Try planting your own garden!

Give an unused area some love by cleaning up any piles of unused materials or scraps to create a space for vegetables, flowers, and plants!

It’s much easier to grow your own food and tend to plants than you may think.

Here are some resources on how to get started:

TIP: Wait until after the May Long Weekend to start planting outside. This will help you avoid your plants getting damaged by frost.

Try planting native species of your province to help support local ecosystems. Check out this resource from The City of Calgary to discover native plants suited to Calgary’s climate that will support the critters in your community.

Eco-friendly landscaping

Already have a garden and looking to revamp your space? Consider sustainable landscaping to save water!

Here are some simple sustainable landscaping ideas to incorporate into your yard:

  • Instead of traditional turf that requires plenty of upkeep and water, opt for mulch, rocks, or gravel to spruce up your garden
  • Use old, reclaimed wood or scrap material to create garden beds, furniture, fencing
  • Collect rainwater for your plants
  • Incorporate drought resistant crops
