From Webinar Attendee to EP®(GHG) Certified, Hendrik Louw’s Commitment to Climate Leadership

Three months ago, Hendrik Louw joined an introductory webinar to learn more about the EP®(GHG) designation, a professional credential from ECO Canada and the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI), designed for greenhouse gas management practitioners looking to formalize and strengthen their expertise. Hendrik is now certified as an Environmental Professional for Greenhouse Gas Management (EP®(GHG)), and recently joined our GHG Certification: EP®(GHG) Open House Q&A webinar to share in the conversation about the application process and the benefits of obtaining the designation.

For Hendrik, earning the designation represents a lifelong commitment to advancing climate action through technical excellence, professional integrity, and practical experience.

A Career Built on Industry Experience

Hendrik’s career began as a chemical engineer in the metals and mining sector, where he developed firsthand knowledge of industrial operations and environmental challenges. His passion for environmental stewardship led him to pursue an M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Analysis, setting the foundation for a career that has now spanned more than 26 years in environmental management.

After retrenchments in the paper industry, Hendrik transitioned into consulting, establishing himself as an independent sustainability and climate change specialist. Since then, he has worked with organizations across sectors, helping them better understand, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions.

His unique combination of operational experience and environmental expertise allows him to bridge the gap between technical requirements and real-world implementation, a skill that is increasingly valuable as organizations navigate complex climate commitments and regulatory expectations.

Shaping Global Climate Standards

Throughout his career, Hendrik has contributed to some of the most important frameworks and standards guiding greenhouse gas management today.

His work on the development of the GHG Protocol for Aluminium and the ISO 19870 series for hydrogen technologies has provided him with extensive experience in developing and applying internationally recognized methodologies for measuring and reporting emissions.

He has also played a pivotal role in national climate reporting efforts, including updating South Africa’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory for both the Energy sector (2022) and the Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) sector (2024).

These contributions demonstrate not only deep technical expertise but also a long-standing commitment to advancing transparent, credible, and consistent greenhouse gas accounting practices.

Supporting Organizations on Their Climate Journey

In addition to his standards and inventory work, Hendrik has dedicated much of his career to helping others build capacity in climate management.

He has trained companies and consultants on greenhouse gas accounting, reporting, and verification while advising organizations on their carbon foot print, carbon strategy development, emissions management, sustainability reporting, validation and verification, and climate-related financial disclosures aligned with IFRS S2.

Today, Hendrik continues to collaborate with several consultancies as a climate change specialist, helping organizations navigate an increasingly carbon-conscious economy.

Why the EP®(GHG) Designation Resonated

With decades of experience and an impressive list of accomplishments, some might ask why a senior professional like Hendrik would obtain the EP®(GHG) designation.

The answer lies in the growing need for recognized, globally relevant credentials in greenhouse gas management.

The EP®(GHG) designation recognizes professionals who have demonstrated expertise in greenhouse gas accounting, reporting, analysis, and verification. It provides a benchmark for technical competence and professional ethics in a field that continues to evolve rapidly.

As organizations face increasing pressure from mandatory reporting requirements, ESG disclosure expectations, carbon markets, and net-zero commitments, qualified professionals are more important than ever. The designation helps practitioners distinguish themselves while demonstrating alignment with international standards and best practices.

For professionals like Hendrik, it represents an opportunity to formally showcase years of experience and continue leading within the global climate community.

“I think we are at a point internationally where we need to be held a bit more accountable for what we do as professionals. Somebody needs to help hold me accountable so that I make sure that I keep my knowledge up to date and that I stay at the top of my game. I think it’s fair toward myself first, but also towards my clients, towards the rest of the profession, etc. And that is why I applied for this.” – Hendrik Louw, EP®(GHG)

Building the Future of Climate Action

Hendrik’s journey reflects what makes the EP®(GHG) community so valuable: a shared commitment to advancing climate solutions through expertise, credibility, and continuous professional development.

From his early days as a chemical engineer to his current work as a climate change specialist, trainer, and advisor, Hendrik has consistently helped organizations understand and reduce their environmental impact. His decision to pursue the EP®(GHG) designation demonstrates that learning and professional growth never stop, even for the most experienced practitioners.

As the demand for skilled greenhouse gas professionals continues to grow, leaders like Hendrik are helping shape the future of climate action.
