Environmental job market rebounds with 9% increase in job postings in 2017

Environmental employment showed recovery in 2017 as 22,700 jobs were posted across Canada.

This growth was likely the result of key factors such as provincial governments implementing climate change plans, and employment increases within key industries hiring environmental workers involved in professional, scientific and technical services, manufacturing, construction and energy industries.

In this report, you will learn about:

    • High growth in key regions. Nova Scotia (+61%), Saskatchewan (+53%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (+49%) showed the highest growth rates over 2016
    • Growing Environmental-related occupations. Ten groups of specific occupations account for 60% of environmental job ads, which indicates that opportunities are found in diverse areas
    • Environmental areas of practice experiencing strong recovery such as Energy Efficiency and Environmental Health & Safety

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
