How Science Horizons Launches Environmental Careers
The Science Horizons Youth Internship program helped young professionals gain hands-on experience in environmental science, sustainability, and conservation while supporting organizations across Canada tackling environmental challenges. While new placements for this program are not currently available, ECO Canada continues to support student employment through the Student Work Placement Program (WPP).

Since 2019, the Science Horizons program has supported thousands of young professionals entering Canada’s environmental workforce while helping organizations strengthen sustainability initiatives.
Strengthening Canada's Environmental Workforce
Participants supported through Science Horizons placements contribute to a wide range of environmental projects, including:
• environmental monitoring and research
• ecological restoration and habitat protection
• sustainability planning and reporting
• climate and environmental data analysis
• environmental communications and outreach
• environmental technology and engineering solutions
These placements provide early-career professionals with the opportunity to apply their academic training in real-world environmental projects while building professional experience.

Supporting Organizations Through Environmental Talent
Through the Science Horizons program, organizations across Canada have been able to strengthen their environmental initiatives and expand their capacity to deliver conservation and sustainability projects.
One host organization reported that their participant contributed to:
• ecological land classification surveys
• habitat restoration projects for tallgrass prairie ecosystems
• biological inventory work using vegetation sampling protocols
• invasive species management efforts
• community planting and restoration events
The organization noted that the participant gained significant experience in conservation work while building confidence in plant identification, field research, and public engagement.
