From the First EP® to 25 Years of Leadership: John Smythe’s Environmental Professional Journey

When John Smythe became the very first recipient of ECO Canada’s Environmental Professional (EP®) designation in 2001, the environmental sector looked very different than it does today. Yet one thing has remained constant throughout his career: a commitment to professional excellence, lifelong learning, and staying ahead of industry change.

Growing up just steps away from Ontario’s Grand River, John’s connection to the environment started early.

“I spent a lot of time on the river… I was just very interested in nature. It just drew me. I think my path was kind of set at that point.”

That passion led him to a career in environmental protection, where he spent more than a decade as a pollution abatement officer responding to spills, monitoring compliance, and protecting public and environmental health. When he first learned about the EP® designation, he saw an opportunity to align himself with a credential dedicated specifically to environmental professionals.

“There really wasn’t something that was more environmentally specific, so that’s why I jumped on it.”

Over the next 25 years, John witnessed significant changes across Canada’s environmental landscape, including major advancements in regulation, climate action, and drinking water protection. Through it all, he remained committed to maintaining the highest professional standards.

“I was very proud to be part of the EP® family.”

For John, the value of the EP® designation goes beyond recognition. It reflects a commitment to credibility, continuous learning, and professional growth.

His advice to the next generation of environmental professionals is simple but powerful:

“I think the most important thing for any professional in any field is staying current with change, with things that are happening.”

The EP® Designation is more than a credential. It reflects a commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and staying current in a rapidly evolving industry. Through ongoing education, networking, and engagement with emerging environmental issues, EP®s demonstrate that they have their finger on the pulse of the profession and are prepared to meet today’s environmental challenges.

Today, as an EP® Emeritus member, John continues to champion the designation and the role it plays in advancing the profession; which remains one of the designation’s most enduring values.

As environmental challenges grow more complex and opportunities continue to emerge across Canada’s environmental and sustainability sectors, the need for recognized, qualified professionals has never been greater.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
