2025 National Model Codes – A New Era of Building Performance

The 2025 National Model Codes, including the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) and National Building Code (NBC), are now released.
This edition of the codes represents a significant shift in how Canada approaches building performance. For the first time, the codes introduce clear, measurable limits on operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They also add new compliance pathways and updated climatic data that better reflect the realities of a changing climate, while strengthening energy-efficiency requirements. A new Part 10 introduces best practices for alterations to existing buildings. This all signals a move toward decarbonization, energy-savings, resilience, and thoughtful future-proofing of our building stock. Heather is a leader in the building science sphere, focused on the investigation and repair of existing building envelope systems, and applying 15+ years of consulting experience and knowledge to new building design, retrofit, and commissioning.
