Energy codes, specifically the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) and Part 9.36. Energy Efficiency of the Building Code, are often perceived merely as regulatory (and sometimes painful) checkboxes. However, when embraced strategically, these codes can serve as integrated design navigators, facilitating collaboration among architects, engineers, builders, and owners. This session will provide a clear, accessible overview of current energy code requirements and methodologies, and demonstrate how a proactive approach to energy code compliance can drive a more cohesive design process, improve building performance, reduce operational costs, and ultimately create healthier, more resilient built environments.
