St. Thomas University’s Sustainability and Environmental Studies Program Earns ECO Canada Accreditation

ECO Canada is proud to announce that the Sustainability and Environmental Studies (SEST) program at St. Thomas University (STU) has received accreditation through ECO Canada’s Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC).

The accreditation recognizes that the program conforms to the National Accreditation Standard (NAS) for post-secondary programs aligned with the National Occupational Standard (NOS), demonstrating its commitment to preparing graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to support Canada’s growing environmental workforce.

“ECO Canada accreditation for STU’s Sustainability and Environmental Studies program is a huge achievement. It recognizes the importance of liberal arts education in the sustainability sector, and specifically the unique set of skills and perspectives that our graduates bring to the table.” – Dr. Janice Harvey, Sustainability and Environmental Studies Program Director, STU

Building the Next Generation of Sustainability Leaders

Sustainability and Environmental Studies offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary education for students who are passionate about creating a more sustainable and just world. Grounded in critical thinking, social justice, and community engagement, the program explores the complex relationships between human communities and the natural world while preparing graduates to address today’s environmental and sustainability challenges.

Experiential Learning with Real-World Impact

The program emphasizes hands-on learning opportunities that connect academic study with practical experience. Students can participate in directed research, community-based projects, field-based learning opportunities, internships, and study abroad experiences that help develop the skills employers are seeking in environmental professionals.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
